St. Paul's Hospital (Vancouver)
St. Paul's Hospital is an acute care, teaching (in affiliation with the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine) and research hospital located in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is the largest of the seven health care facilities operated by Providence Health Care, a Roman Catholic faith-based care provider. St. Paul's is home to many medical and surgical programs, including cardiac services, HIV/AIDS and kidney care.
St. Paul's serves both the local community and patients from across BC and the Yukon.
History
Two representatives of the Sisters of Providence came north from Portland, Oregon in 1892 in response to urgings by Bishop Paul Durieu of New Westminster to consider the needs of a growing Vancouver. They bought seven lots on the outskirts of Vancouver for $9,000. A 25-bed hospital was completed in 1894 and named after the Bishop. Mother Mary Fredrick from Astoria, Oregon became the first Superior and administrator of the hospital.
